Please reach us at admin@tvrd.com.au if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Short answer is NO!
Our coaches teach you not only the fundamentals of derby but can teach you to skate as well. You will learn the fundamentals of skating, including stopping and how to fall safely, Every member is given a skills handbook so you can keep track of your progress and celebrate your achievements. When you are ready, you will be able to participate in our bouts confidently and have a great time on track!
While we don't offer trial memberships, we do periodically hold "Come and Try" days for both juniors and seniors. However, why wait? You are able to join a normal training session (3pm juniors / 5pm seniors) and give roller derby a go. It's free to try and we can supply the skates, helmets and protective gear if you don't have your own.
To participate in a come and try (one available per person) you must complete a "come and try" insurance form through our insurance provider, Skate Victoria.
If you decide to join you will be required to pay Towns Villains Roller Derby yearly membership, term fees (due each term) and insurance through Skate Victoria appropriate for your level: Roller Derby - Senior Recreational, or Roller Derby - Junior Recreational. If you decide to become more serious and wish to participate in scrims, boot camps or intercity bouts you will be required to change your level to "competitive".
Comfortable clothes are a must particularly cool clothing choices in summer. Players skate on quads (4-wheeled roller skates), and are required to wear protective gear including wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads and a helmet. A mouth guard is also a requirement and don't forget your water bottle!
No. We do have skates, pads and helmets available for hire until you are ready to purchase your own.
The only thing we don't supply are mouthguards. These can be purchased at chemists, sports stores, online or our choice for all derby equipment, Cre8ive Sk8 at Aitkenvale.
Anyone and everyone is welcome! We have both senior and junior skaters. Juniors are from 6 years to 17. Seniors are 18+.
Volunteers are always welcome anytime our derby family gets together! Referees and coaches must be 18+ and there are always opportunities for non-skating officials (NSO's) at bouts, scrims and bootcamps.
